what i read in september

An interesting mix this month…

Nervous Conditions - Always interesting to learn about a new cultural moment, in a place I don’t know much about. I liked it. Not the most innovative writing but the characters really stuck with me weeks afterward.

Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt - I’ve wanted to learn more about Attica and this didn’t disappoint. Very illuminating but damned if it didn’t take me 10 minutes to read each page because it leans toward the academic.

Hit Parade of Tears - HATED IT. HATED IT. HATED IT. Great example of when an author’s lifestyle is mythologized and generates a cult following even though the writing is sub par.

Afterlives - Again culturally educational. Good writing. But the ending was very disappointing. Can’t wait to discuss this one at book club.

Ready for Revolution: the Life and Struggles of Stokely Carmichael - Just started it and I’m enthralled. But it’s a slow read; I haven’t broken 10 pages in a sitting.
